It's kinda like Morrisey lyrics meets Depeche Mode production. That may be going too far, but that's what came to mind first. Darren Hayes shows an extremely intimate, vulnerable side of himself as a highly contrasting follow-up to the initial "commercial prostitute" single "Popular". "Darkness" references what would have to be an extended period time spent underground as the accuracy and depth of the lyrics could only be the product of personal experience and a lengthy residency within his own head. All but one of the remixes works really well, both the DP Behind the Darkness and the pair of Dynamix & Jaytech mixes maintain the introverted tone even through different tempos and never undermine the song's intention. The Roc & Soul Club Mix however sounds far too happy for the lyrics. Ray Roc has done some pretty successful stuff in the past, I'm a bit surprised at this obvious misstep, it's not that it's a poorly produced mix, it's just that artistically one hopes that there would be a bit more sensitivity to the subject matter reflected in the club incarnation. But aside from that, I'm absolutely in love with this single, I love it when pop stars drop the wall and let you inside their own humanity.

I love these remixes. I played the deep glow mix at the club I spin at and even though no one had a clue what the song was, it packed the floor. I anxiously await the new album and hopefully a bunch of remixes to go with it. (S.R., 1/29/2005 see all my reviews >> )

This song is taken from Darren Hayes' latest album, "The Tension and the Spark", which is a much darker, more pensive work than his earlier album, "Spin". Having said that, the quality of the vocals and the song writing (especially, the lyrics) on the new album show that Darren Hayes is maturing as an artist. Some of the remixes of "Darkness" on this CD single are pretty good, but they are definitely not peak hour stuff. (W.A., 12/23/2004 see all my reviews >> )
